Remodelling Doctor Letamendi Square in Barcelona
Remodelling Doctor Letamendi Square in Barcelona
Full refurbishment of Doctor Letamendi Square and improvements to the playground to make it a much more accessible and green space.
Upgrading the public space and playground in Doctor Letamendi Square is part of the Participatory Budget scheme. The residents of l’Eixample chose this project under the tagline “Let’s make Doctor Letamendi Square greener and better to play in”. Interventions included:
- Bringing play areas together. The games are spread across the square and arranged by categories, leaving a central space for pedestrians.
- Addition of planters and signposting to redirect the bike and scooter route.
- Improvements to the square’s lighting and drainage system.
The three play areas are divided up by the age of the children. The first is a sandbox for children up to 5 years old; the second is for jumping and balancing exercises on decomposed granite paving, and the third has a swing, trampoline and roundabout on soft flooring. All the games are accessible or have an accessible alternative and the three areas are connected by sitting and meeting areas fitted with furniture.
