Restoration of Santa Eulalia Siphon Bridge in Huelva province
Restoration of Santa Eulalia Siphon Bridge in Huelva province
Repair and reinforcement of the structural components of Santa Eulalia Siphon Bridge to make it more efficient and safer.
Santa Eulalia Siphon Bridge has a total length of 1,600 m supported on 80 spans. Its total width is 12.40 m, divided into two 3.50 m carriageways and a cycle path on the downstream side.
It was built in 1967 and 1968 and has been repaired several times without resolving its structural problems.
This project features a number of improvement measures including:
- Repairing decks, headers and piers in poor condition.
- Cleaning the concrete surface.
- Treating cracks.
- Reinforcement.
- Repairing the concrete facing.
- Repairing deck fronts (joints).
- Renewing joints in the pipes running along the bridge deck using new watertight gaskets.
- Repairing and reinforcing the foundations of the piers on the land side, on both the Corrales and Huelva sides, which have not been reinforced in previous actions.
- Preparing and excavating the foundations.
- Cleaning existing pile caps.
- Inspecting the junction of the metal pile with the pile cap and potential actions
- Repairing the metal piles.
- Repairing existing pile caps.
- Anti-acid protection of the pile caps.
- Final repair by means of micropiles and prestressed pile caps.
- Improving safety at work for operating personnel and third parties by replacing the existing handrail and the expansion joints in the roadway.
- Electrical connection at the head of the siphon on the Huelva side.
The bridge runs over the protected natural environment of the Odiel Marshes, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Consequently, all measures are taken to limit the impact on environmental quality (discharges, polluting deposits, gaseous emissions, waste generation, etc.), and also potential noise pollution.
