The bridge required comprehensive intervention due to various problems. The assessment found significant spalling of the roadbed despite the fact that it has been repaired on a regular basis coupled with generalised degradation of the metal profiles due to corrosion caused by various factors such as dirt and wear and tear of the protective paint. The bridge’s frame was adversely affected by the salinity of the marine environment, an ineffective drainage system and the lack of a sealing bead at the joints. There was also deterioration of the coating on the steel bars of the foundation and abutments. Several actions were carried out to solve these problems: 

- Refurbishing and reinforcing the lower deck: cleaning metal structures, reviewing parts with defects and carrying out the planned reinforcement work, sealing profiles and maintenance and replacement of supports, including elastomeric supports at the base of the piers and protective painting. 

- Repairing concrete surfaces of abutments and pier bases: cleaning and blasting surfaces, concrete restoration, injection of cracks and crevices in abutments and application of anti-carbonation paint. 

- Reinforcement slab and superstructure works: demolition of the ramp pavement by milling, removal of parapets, demolition of strips, reinforcement, formwork and concreting of slab and wall, waterproofing and wall drainage. Milling the bridge deck pavement, repairing and cleaning the decking, replacing expansion joints, reinforcing the slab, execution and sealing. 

- Vehicle signage and restraint systems: by means of a metal parapet anchored to the concrete support and road markings and signs with hot thermoplastic reflective paint. 

- Surfaces and pavements: by means of a wearing course of bituminous mix of 5cm AC 16 surf B50/70 D with granite aggregate and C60bp3 adherence watering.
