Upgrading the public space of Port Vell in Barcelona to improve the pedestrian experience
Upgrade and improvement works on the public space of Port Vell in Barcelona to create climate refuges to provide areas for pedestrians to rest.
- Preliminary work, such as dismantling and stockpiling existing elements.
- Civil works, notably the levelling and anchors for the new installations and the formation of the foundations, blocks and bases.
- Installation of new furniture, planters, benches and bins, flowerbed protection railings and the supply and planting of vegetation.
This last point is vital because it creates a more pleasant urban space by providing areas for rest. Given its location, plant species resistant to salinity and high temperatures have been used that ensure good drainage and respect the Mediterranean environment, such as Tamarix gallica, Callistemon, Asparagus, Myoporum parvifolium and Westringea fructicosa, among others.
The rest areas have been designed with modules that integrate the seat with the planter and allow users to relax among the vegetation, improving the pedestrian experience. In addition, a series of poles with a water spray system have been distributed irregularly throughout the port to help mitigate the high temperatures on the hottest days.
