Sorigué completes construction of new Alcañiz hospital in Aragon

August 1, 2024

The new health facility covers an area of 136,123 m2 and will be a key site for the county which is made up of 85 municipalities.

The Sorigué group through its company Acsa has built a new hospital in the town of Alcañiz in Teruel, Aragon, for the Aragon Health Service Department.

The project has been divided into two stages. The first consisted of developing the site and the second of constructing the building. The group’s Infrastructure and Materials and Building divisions worked together on this project alongside Aragonesa de Obras Civiles.

The new hospital will provide care for 72,290 people from 85 municipalities and become the referral hospital for the county.

Alcañiz includes the health areas of Alcañiz, Alcorisa, Andorra, Calaceite, Cantavieja, Caspe, Híjar, Maella, Mas de las Matas, Muniesa and Valderrobres, towns that for almost two decades have been calling for a comprehensive health complex including A&E, surgical and obstetric services plus outpatient visits and inpatient care.

Four-storey building

The project includes two large implementation blocks: firstly, the foundations and concrete frame, and secondly, the earthworks. The first stage included the earthing network, underground drainage and waterproofing retaining walls.

Subsequently, backfilling and the heliport were completed as part of the site’s development. In total, an area of 136,123 m2 has been worked on, split into 92,943 m2 for health facilities and 43,180 m2 for roads.

The elongated shape of the plot set the tone for the design of a compact rectangular building with four floors. Two main routes run along the entire length of the building, one for restricted traffic and the other for public use.

The blocks housing healthcare activities have been attached to these two routes and arranged in groups by their purpose. Four 18.70 m wide cross blocks separated by 13.70 m courtyards connect the two routes while a third independent block joins the complex at one end.

Hospital infrastructures

Drawing on its extensive experience in building healthcare complexes, Sorigué has led major projects such as the construction of the outpatients unit in the maternity and paediatric department at Cordoba University Hospital. This project, which spans some 10,000 m2, consisted of setting up 78 new consulting rooms in a design featuring independent circuits for different types of patients.

It is also constructing the new care building at Hospital Sant Rafael in Barcelona covering 8,000 m² and with a 120-bed capacity. This facility is to provide medical care for the elderly, people with disabilities and people with mental health problems.

Other large-scale healthcare projects in which Sorigué has been involved include building an emergency unit for Granollers Hospital in Barcelona province and the construction of the San Juan de Dios mental health residence in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Each project has followed the technical specifications required by the medical speciality or scientific activities to be conducted.
