Sorigué leads construction of new care building at Barcelona’s Sant Rafael Hospital
The new facility has a highly flexible functional structure and a 120-bed capacity which can be expanded to deal with any health emergencies in the city.
Sorigué has begun construction of the new CAIIB Jordà Integrated Intermediate Care Centre at Sant Rafael Hospital in Barcelona which will provide healthcare for the elderly, people with disabilities and people with mental health problems.
The new facility will have 8,000 m² in floor area and a capacity of 120 beds. The works are scheduled for completion in early 2025 and the centre is expected to come into operation during the first quarter of the same year.
The plot, covering 34,302m2, is in the Horta-Guinardó district. Its site in an area with two hospitals and numerous social and healthcare residences generates the synergies that underpin the need for the new facility.
Its architectural structure, geographical location and healthcare setting mean that the new building will have the functional capacity to address a wide range of needs.
It will thus be able to cater for a variety of highly complex health and social situations and quickly isolate patients and/or household units. It will also have the capacity to absorb health contingencies in the city.
The project has been designed with a highly flexible functional structure featuring single rooms which can be expanded to accommodate two patients. This means the facilities will be ready in case of a sudden upsurge in activity as happened during the Covid-19 health emergency.
The ground floor and the three upper floors will house the patient rooms and areas for family members and visitors along with spaces for healthcare staff, including nursing care, offices, treatment rooms, assisted bathrooms and storage rooms.
All the floors of the rooms will be divided into two wings, each of which will have independent access from the bank of lifts. Consequently, in the event of a pandemic or similar situations the two wings can be separated while maintaining their functionality and autonomy.
New healthcare model
The need to set up a new Integrated Care Centre in Barcelona has been identified in response to the growing demand for comprehensive medical care for people with multiple diseases, especially among the elderly.
The creation of the CAIIB Jordà is a new way of treating highly complex patients. The centre will provide a healthcare reserve to ensure that these patients receive complete care in one place, thus avoiding transfers between different healthcare centres and lessening their exposure to environments which are harmful to their health.
