Sorigué builds roof for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
The new canopy will increase comfort for spectators attending the circuit’s sports events in the VIP grandstand.
Sorigué has built the new canopy covering the VIP grandstand for Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, a track in Montmeló and Granollers in Barcelona province.
It is a 300 tonne, 57.10 m long and 18.77 m wide roof designed to ensure the comfort of people attending motorsport exhibitions, races, shows and events.
The biggest challenges in the project were the tight schedule and making the construction work compatible with use of the track.
The work included a a deep foundation base in reinforced concrete and metal frame porticoes supporting the rectangular canopy which is made up of a sandwich panel system and completely waterproof TPO panels.
Once the works were completed, Sorigué was also tasked with upgrading development of the access roads to the grandstand along with the corrugated iron sheeting on the central access tower.
The grandstand is a single, completely open block made up of three staircases leading to the decks. To build the canopy, Sorigué attached a structure formed by metal purlins and profiles to the existing reinforced concrete frame measuring 65 m in diameter.
Experience in race tracks
Sorigué has already worked on this track on other occasions. In 2023, it undertook the improvement works on the bend 1 run-off to provide greater safety for riders and drivers in compliance with International Automobile Federation (FIA) and International Motorcycling Federation (FIM) regulations.
In 2004 and later in 2018, it was in charge of resurfacing the tracks, significantly upgrading their quality for the challenging conditions of the international races held at these facilities. Since 2017 it has also been delivering maintenance and repair services for electrical equipment and systems.
Meanwhile, for over two decades Sorigué has been entrusted with the annual resurfacing of the main tracks at the Test tracks Spain - IDIADA.
