Sorigué will begin work on the second section of the southern rail access to the port of Castellón

October 31, 2023

Acsa, a company from the Sorigué group, is part of the joint venture responsible for carrying out these works, which are included in the Mediterranean Corridor global connection project to promote more efficient and sustainable transport of goods.

The Administrador de Infraestructuras Ferroviarias (ADIF) has awarded the joint venture of Sorigué, Acsa and Contratas Vilor with the contract for the construction of the second section of the new railway access to the southern basin of the port of Castellón. The works, which begin in November 2023 and finish in March 2026, extend the first section with a large-scale project that aims to connect the port with the Mediterranean Corridor to promote intermodal transport of goods.

The contract includes all the preparation works for levelling, replacement of affected services, drainage, raising and adaptation of the platform, among other works.

The final infrastructure consists of a 3,597.28 m long single-track axis, two viaducts with a span of 130 and 35 metres, two subways inside the port area and two 29.50 m overpasses for the elevated roundabouts.

Some of the most notable works include laying out a 35 m long viaduct to cross the Fraga ravine and the final section inside the port facilities, which will cross the existing irrigation channels at two points.

Connection with section 1

The new railway platform will connect with section 1 at a point reserved for the start of the future Intermodal Station, a terminal on which a platform will be built as part of this project, with main tracks for receiving and dispatching trains and a loading and unloading track.

Once the entire project has been completed, the new infrastructure will enable more efficient, competitive and sustainable transport, as railway access to the port of Castellón is only currently possible to the north dock via a route that starts at the Les Palmes siding.  A trainline to the south dock will optimise transport times and flows, making them more efficient.

The works are part of the initiatives promoted by the Spanish Ministry of Transport, Mobility and Urban Agenda (MITMA) to improve rail-port connectivity and strengthen Spanish ports as key logistics platforms in the south of the continent.

Part of the financing comes from European funds, through the “NextGenerationEU Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union”.
