Surfacing of the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya
Resurfacing work on the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in January 2018.
The existing surface had been paved in 2005 and presented some irregularities that hindered good driving and the safety of the drivers and events in general.
The new asphalt surface is a major improvement that has solved the existing problems and increased the quality of the track.
The work consisted of cutting the existing bearing layer and the upper part of the intermediary layer to a thickness of 7 cm.
The subsequent resurfacing was done with asphalt from the base layer with 3 cm of SMA 6 CBM and the bearing layer with 4 cm TOP LAYER CBM.
The TOP LAYER bearing layer meets the consistency, homogeneity and slip resistance requirements that are required for international racing circuits.
The cutting work was carried out over two days with seven W200 milling machines working in parallel with the multiplex system. The surface to cut was 62,500 m2 with a thickness of 7 cm.
For the paving work, two W1800-3 / W1900-3 pavers worked in parallel across 14 m and with consistency controls set to 6 m AB600. The asphalt was supplied by two transfer tanks.
It took three days to pave the 3 cm SMA intermediate layer and three additional days to complete the TOP LAYER bearing layer.
The surface was compacted with five tandem road rollers working simultaneously. The supply was provided by 21 dumper trucks.
During the entire project, the consistency and planimetry control of the layers was set to 3 m and 4 m.
