Sorigue supports developing clothing made from recycled fibre in its Green Infrastructure teams

May 17, 2024

Ambitec, the group’s specialist green infrastructure company, is investing in using recycled fibres to manufacture high-visibility workwear for three of its most iconic services. In a second stage, the project will include collecting used work clothes to give them a second life through fibre reuse or energy recovery.

Sorigué’s green infrastructure company Ambitec has embarked on a pilot test to use work clothes made from high-visibility recycled fibre for its green area maintenance contracts in Terrassa, in Vallparadís Park in Terrassa and in Sabadell in Barcelona province.

The new uniforms have been designed in conjunction with Prewaste in a conscious commitment to local manufacturing.

The outcome is a shirt and trouser outfit which complies with Class 2 high-visibility requirements that are mandatory to make sure people can be seen and are safe in the workplace.

The garments carry the Global Recycled Standard (GRS) certificate, a label guaranteeing textile materials have been recycled in compliance with environmental and social standards.

In the case of Sorigué, they include 65% recycled fibres and, needless to say, are OEKO-TEX® certified which confirms the products are made with materials which are not harmful to health. The two garments are also eco-designed which means they can be recycled.

Both the recycled fabric and the clothing are designed and produced in facilities in Terrassa, Sabadell and Mataró which are close to the areas where the service is delivered. Local production for the entire process was an essential prerequisite for Sorigué to ensure the project’s sustainability.

One hundred shirts and 50 pairs of trousers have been manufactured in this first pilot test for the teams’ summer kit. Over the next few months, the clothes will be evaluated and using them for the group’s other services and the winter season will be assessed.

Closing the clothing circle

Sorigué changes its teams’ workwear twice a year. This is essential to ensure that the garments used are in good condition and do not lose their PPE properties due to wear and tear and washing.

To minimise the environmental impact of this rotation, Sorigué will also arrange for the collection of used clothing in all its contracts to make certain the waste is properly handled.

In this pilot project, Sorigué is seeking to enhance the sustainability of its workwear by applying sustainability standards across the product’s entire lifecycle.
