Sorigué designs a high-performance emulsion application for cold recycling

July 22, 2016

The Research Laboratory of Sorigué has designed an enhanced emulsion that is 30% more resistant than conventional emulsions. On-site cold recycling technology is performed at ambient temperature with application of only water and the emulsion, offering a more sustainable alternative for structural rehabilitation of aging pavements.

Sorigué is currently conducting the first phase of a project for structural improvement of pavement on the A-220 Highway from La Almunia de Doña Godina to Cariñena, in Aragon. This project consists of the rehabilitation of the roadway pavement using the cold recycling technique with emulsion, allowing 100% of the existing asphalt to be leveraged in a single process.

When executing this recycling technique, a standard emulsion does not suffice to meet regulatory requirements. For this reason, Sorigué has created a specific high-performance emulsion, developed at the group’s Research Laboratory. This center includes a highly qualified technical team, and is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and modern materials testing technologies.

The enhanced formula is based on a special composite that includes various surfactants, designed on the fly to provide the mixture with greater cohesion and resistance.

The result has been recovery of the mechanical characteristics of the treated material, with a 30% increase in resistance in the final mixture over conventional recycling processes, and with much shorter curing times than those required under current regulations. This formula allows these projects to be completed more quickly, thus reducing the effects of traffic detours and interruptions.

Sorigué has presented the successful results obtained with this emulsion to the provincial governments of Teruel, Zaragoza, and Huesca, to the Ministry of Public Works and Transport, with representatives from the highway and preservation division, and to the government of Catalonia.
