Eight months since the start of the new selective waste collection service, organized by Sorigué, and the 22 municipalities participating in the Door to Door scheme have increased the percentage they recycle from 25 to 83 percent.
On Friday May 3 Sorigué officially presented its door-to-door service team to the representatives of the Segrià district council at the Group’s facilities in Rufea, Lleida.
The new selective waste collection service, which will be carried out by Sorigué’s waste management specialist, Nordvert, began on October 1 across the district’s 22 municipalities. It is the largest door-to-door system in Catalonia to date, covering 35,000 residents.
Since its launch to date, the recycling rate in these municipalities has risen from 25 to 83 percent. Selective collection has increased the most in organic residues and light packaging, with an increase in collection of around 300% in each section.
The door-to-door model consists of collecting waste on the doorstep of houses and apartment blocks, separated into organic waste, packaging (plastics, cans, and cartons), paper and cardboard and non-recyclable waste. The objective of this service is to increase the percentage of recycling from 25 percent under the street-side container system to 70 percent.
The company currently offers the service during daylight hours across 18 municipalities and at nighttime in 4 municipalities.
The implementation of the service has involved delivering new trash bins and containers to domestic users, shops and major producers of waste. Furthermore, 29 deposit areas and waste collection facilities have been designed and built across 22 municipalities. In addition, the service has three environmental educators who impart information, advice and training to the general public.
