Font d’en Fargues Square is one of the main gateways to Guinardó Park from the Horta neighbourhood in Barcelona. Until the 1970s it was a major meeting place where people used to gather with its fountain as its distinctive feature. However, urban development of the surrounding area meant that the water was no longer safe to drink and the site fell into disrepair.
- Against this background, the main goal was to restore dignity to the degraded environment by means of the following actions:
- Organising the whole area.
- Recovering the existing esplanades by creating areas with a range of leisure uses (picnics, recreation, sports and viewpoint).
- Setting up an accessible route allowing access to the central part of the square from both Mauricio Vilomara Street and La Font d’en Fargues Boulevard.
- Improving the space for pedestrians with a path and steps to enhance connections.
- Arranging the vehicle manoeuvring space to allow the school bus to turn around.
- Providing suitable materials for urban development as a park.
- Equipping the space with the lighting required and putting services currently in the overhead network underground.
- Adapting existing and new plants to take into account the features of the site and laying the watering network for maintaining them.
- Fitting accessible street furniture.
- Ensuring run-off water drainage.
- Providing drinking water, electrification and IMI cable network for the kiosk and sanitary services at the bottling plant.
All the actions have been coordinated with the work to renovate the Font d’en Fargues fountain.
