Sorigué boosts its commitment to investing in start-ups and its drive for innovation

February 20, 2020

The business group strengthens its commitment to the entrepreneurial spirit of Barcelona by joining Tech Spirit Barcelona, an initiative in the start-up community that has the support of private entities and public institutions. Since 2014, Sorigué, within the framework of its Strategic Plan, has been supporting investment in new business models with a focus on emerging technologies, especially start-ups from Barcelona's entrepreneurial ecosystem.

Barcelona, 20 February 2020. - The Sorigué business group, an industry leader in services, construction, materials, and water technology and engineering, has joined Tech Spirit Barcelona as a sponsor. It has also taken part in over 100 of the scheduled activities and conferences with a focus on entrepreneurship. The event is being promoted by Barcelona Tech City, a private non-profit organisation that brings together more than a thousand companies in the technology and digital sector in Barcelona, in response to the cancellation of the Mobile Word Congress and 4YFN.

The initiative, which was held from 23 to 27 February, saw the participation of over 5,000 attendees and 400 companies. Tech Spirit Barcelona had the support of the Barcelona City Council, the Regional Government of Catalonia, the Catalan agency ACCIÓ, the Government of Spain, Mobile World Capital Barcelona, the Zona Franca Consortium, Barcelona Activa, the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce, Barcelona Municipal Services and other entities from the start-up community.

Sorigué considered it essential to take part in this event, which is organized by the entrepreneurial ecosystem of Barcelona and is a meeting point for large companies, start-ups, international investment funds, and entrepreneurs, as it clearly fits into its strategy of promoting innovation and knowledge management.

Investing in innovation and technology

In 2013, as part of the group’s first Strategic Plan, Sorigué decided to bolster its approach to innovation and the diversification of its business. From that day forward, the company began to invest strategically in technological start-ups that stood out in the entrepreneurial ecosystem, especially in Barcelona, with the aim of supporting local entrepreneurship and promoting synergies with projects that generate knowledge for the company itself.

Over the years, Sorigué has directly invested in more than 25 companies, or over 40 companies when taking into account the venture capital funds specialised in start-ups in which it has also invested.

Focusing on CleanTech and PropTech

Currently, as part of its 2020 Strategic Plan, Sorigué is committed to bolstering its support for the entrepreneurial fabric and its participation in start-ups, especially in areas linked to sustainability and innovation in the construction world and CleanTech. The company is considering investment in new start-ups in the PropTech sector under the venture builder model, which accompanies the growth of a company from its beginning.

Here are some of the start-ups in which Sorigué is investing at present: Honext, a start-up that manufactures sustainable panels from paper mill waste; and Eolos, a company that designs, manufactures and sells marine buoys. The group also has a stake in TradeInn and Alucan through Suma Capital; in Prontopiso and Carnovo through Antai Venture Builder; and in the Inveready Biotech III venture capital fund.
