DAM and Sorigué carry out adaptation and legalisation works on the Santa Eulària des Riu outfall underwater pipelines in Ibiza

December 11, 2023

This project will extend the length of the pipelines by 900 metres out to sea and enable the wastewater treated by the Santa Eulària des Riu WWTP to be deposited in the best environmental conditions possible. The work will take 8 months and was tendered by the Agència Balear de l’Aigua i de la Qualitat Ambiental.

The DAM Group and Sorigué were awarded the construction project to adapt and legalise the Santa Eulària des Riu WWTP sea outfall system in Ibiza, after a tendering process launched by the Agència Balear de l’Aigua i de la Qualitat Ambiental (ABAQUA) on the Balearic Islands.

With an estimated duration of 8 months, the project will involve the adaptation of an underwater pipeline that will extend the distance of the outfall to 900 metres out to sea.

The underwater polyethylene pipeline will extend for 900 m, with a diameter of 630 mm, buried in an underwater trench for the first 410 metres, then half-buried for another 90 metres, and finally resting on the seabed for the remaining distance.

The end goal is for the water treated and purified by the Santa Eulària des Riu WWTP in Ibiza, which works at a maximum treatment rate of 1,500 m3/h, to be deposited almost 1,000 metres away from the coast.

The purpose of the underwater outfall pipeline is to discharge wastewater into the sea in the best possible environmental conditions, so it does not alter the natural appearance of the seawater.

The project was drafted back in 2005, but for various reasons it could not be put out to tender until a few months ago, so the new technical report took into particular consideration the latest technological advances made in this domain.
