The Mataró WWTP sea outfall discharges the water from the city’s sewerage system through a 2 km DN1000 mm pipe.
An 18 metre pipe fracture occurred 600 metres away from the coast, requiring the emergency installation of 36 metres of new pipe.
This work required a variety preliminary tasks:
- Underwater measurements and positioning of the fracture.
- Designing the pipe parts and sections for fitting.
- Collecting and distributing material at the Mataró Port.
- Cleaning the inside of the underwater sections.
- Treating the ends and removing the fractured piping.
- Aligning and assembling the new pipe sections.
- Fitting and operational checks.
- Assembling specific clamps for the pipe’s diameter.
This work was carried out by a highly specialised and experienced underwater crew with state-of-the-art equipment, along with a work boat fully equipped and prepared for maritime and underwater projects.
Acsa, Obras e Infraestructuras’s Underwater Works Department crew was involved in the work, made up of 2 team leaders and 5 professional divers.
The following work was performed:
- Repairing and replacing the damaged section by installing 36 m of new piping during 100-to-130-minute dives.
- Aligning and adjusting existing piping that was shifted across an 80 plus metre section.
- Installing 12 double anchors set into the sandy seabed and unclogging diffusers.
- Checking the hydraulic and structural operation of the connection, and removing work material for a clean and untouched seabed.
